President's Letter to the Community

2015 Homecoming -- Thank You!

November 4, 2015

Dear Spelman Community,
What a great 2015 Homecoming week!  Having experienced my first Spelman Homecoming, I can say with enthusiasm that I enjoyed every minute. From the Homecoming Opening Worship to the Miss Spelman Tea, I witnessed the warmth and welcome of our Spelman family coming from all over the country to celebrate Spelman College.

It was wonderful to see so many parents, families, volunteers and former students on campus. Over 1,600 alumnae joined us at the 2015 "Homecoming" (an eight percent increase over last year's numbers). At every turn, I heard complimentary remarks on how much the College continues to grow and witnessed expressions of pride in Spelman's well-earned reputation for excellence. It was especially wonderful to see all the “I Gave” buttons sported by hundreds of Spelman women!

Please join me in thanking the following divisions for their hard work and contributions that made Homecoming 2015 such an outstanding success:

  • Student Affairs, Dr. Darnita Killian, Vice President;
  • College Relations, Dr. Jane Smith; Vice President;
  • Institutional Advancement, Kassandra Jolley, Vice President;
  • Financial and Business Affairs, Robert (Danny) Flanigan, CFO and Vice President; and
  • Media and Information Technology, Delores Barton. CIO and Vice President.

Their teams pooled their talent and resources to create a welcoming and engaging environment for all of our guests. We also extend our thanks to our colleagues from both Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University for joining in the combined activities in support of our students.

Thank you everyone. I can’t wait until next year!

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
