President's Letter to the Community

First in the World Grant

October 19, 2015

Dear Spelman Community,

In my haste to share the recent exciting news about Spelman, I neglected to acknowledge the faculty team responsible for our $2.7M First in the World grant.

I write now to rectify that oversight. The program will be directed by Dr. Francesina Jackson, director of Spelman's Center for Academic Planning and Success and chair of the Education Studies Program, and Dr. Jimmeka Guillory, assistant professor of psychology. They are supported by experimental economist Dr. Angelino Viceisza, sociologist Dr. Bruce Wade, and quantitative psychologist Dr. A. Nayena Blankson, as well as an advisory committee of researchers and educators from around the country.

These five dedicated Spelman faculty members from four different departments collaborated on this winning interdisciplinary proposal, which won a near-perfect score in the first-tier review. Dr. Desiree Pedescleaux, dean of undergraduate studies, was active in the advising of this proposal team, and Dr. Claudia Scholz, director of the Office of Sponsored Programs, provided excellent leadership as well. Sincere thanks go to Interim Provost Dr. Myra Burnett and Helga Greenfield, chief of staff to the president and associate vice president for Title III and Government Relations, for their roles in the grant submission.
