For over 20 years, Carter has been a leader and innovator, serving in various organizations and in many different leadership roles focused on making a positive difference in the lives of children at risk. She served as president of the Junior League of Montclair-Newark (JLMN) Inc. and spent a decade on the Board of Trustees for CASA (County Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Essex County where she served as chairman for four of those years.

Carter is a member of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College; the North Jersey Chapter of The Links Incorporated, IMPACT100 Essex County, and the Leadership Council of IFEL (Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership).  She is an active parent volunteer at the Montclair Kimberley Academy where she is a recently appointed Affiliate to the Board of Trustees.

Over the years, Carter has received many community service honors and awards including the JLMN Volunteer of the Year and President’s Award; the Red Cross Service Award; the Greater Essex Chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc and the NJ Labor Advisory Board to the UNCF community service awards.

Why I Serve on the Spelman College Board of Trustees

Spelman College changed my life and put me on a trajectory that was beyond what I could ever have imagined. Equipped with my Spelman education, I was able to pursue my graduate degree at the highest level. However, it was my Spelman experience that helped me develop that awareness and self-confidence to compete and excel anytime, anywhere and especially in situations where there is no one else who looks like me.

Simply put, my Spelman experience is priceless. I am honored to serve on the Board of Trustees so that I can do all I can to provide this same opportunity and advantage to as many young women as possible.
