Fela!

To the world, AfroBeats may be a new phenomenon, but it is not. The electric sounds of Nigerian culture are coming to life through Fela! at the Southwest Arts Center until Sunday, March 3, thanks to the ingenious directorial and choreographic work of Spelman alumna, Jade Maia Lambert, C'98

Spelman Alumna Jade Lambert SmithFela! is the first production for Lambert Smith Media, a creative hub dedicated to producing groundbreaking entertainment through multimedia immersive experiences.

“I’ve always loved being a producer. I got my love for directing at Spelman. When I took my capstone directing class, that’s when I knew that’s what I was going to do. I taught at Spelman between 2008 and 2011. It’s really great to be back to give back to my department,” said Lambert.

An audacious fusion of Afrobeat, rebellion and unapologetic energy, Fela! is a cultural celebration featuring theater and performance major, Taylor Mills, C'2026 who is debuting in her first musical.

Taylor Mills“I'm honored to be given this opportunity to play a role in this Broadway hit musical. Performing in Fela! gives me the opportunity to network with professionals in my field and has impacted my Spelman experience to the fullest. I have become more confident in my dancing, acting and singing because of this production,” said Mills.

More About Fela! the Musical

Fela! the musical is about Nigerian musician Fela Aníkúlapó Kuti, a leader of the Pan-African movement and the father of Afrobeat who used his music to inspire people to make a change and create awareness about his African heritage. After his mother was killed by the Nigerian government, he used his music to exhort social change.

Songs like “Zombie” and “Upside Down” promote a message of activism and reveal how Nigerian colonists are being treated. In this jukebox musical, audiences are encouraged to jump out of their seats as they witness the  story of how 1,000 Nigerian soldiers target Fela Kuti to end his groundbreaking performances promoting activism at his nightclub, “The Shrine.” Secure your tickets for shows on Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3, 2024.
