Spelman College’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, hosted by the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement, encouraged students, faculty, staff and alumnae to strengthen service values by creating positive and impactful contributions in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This year, 200 members of the Spelman community teamed up to complete trail maintenance at the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA) and the Beltline with Trees Atlanta, conduct campus beautification projects at Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy and W.J. Scott Elementary School, orchestrate spring planting preparation at the Omenala Griot Afrocentric Museum, and assemble 160 school bags filled with school supplies for students in Jackson, Mississippi.
The Spelman and Morehouse College Glee Clubs – along with the Clayton State University Choir and the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church Choir – also gathered for the Lift Every Voice and Sing: Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert. The concert also featured the world premiere composition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by Spelman Glee Club director, Kevin P. Johnson, DMA.
