Spelman launched the Fresh Harvest Market: Indoor Farmer & Artisan Market from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Lower Manley. The market, inspired by an initiative of Miss Spelman 2018-2019 Eva Dickerson, C’2019, featured fresh produce, honey, baked goods, organic/natural/sustainable products and a few vegan/vegetarian food vendors, said Aisha Hitson, director of Spelman’s Office of Student Life and Engagement.
Dickerson said the idea was inspired by professors
Kimberly Jackson, Ph.D., director of Spelman's
food studies program, and associate professor and chair of the
Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, and
Kuumba M. Bahati, Ph.D., associate director of the Women's Research and Resource Center and professor of comparative women's studies. “I knew that a Farmer's Market was a tool for social justice. They employ local farmers and connect communities in need with fresh food,” said Dickerson. “The market is really a place where communities can come together and build around the ways we need to innovate the food system.” The market will take place each Tuesday until Winter Break.
