Spelman Senior Tiana Barnwell featured in Essence Magazine Article

tiana barnwell 2Graduating Spelman senior Tiana Barnwell, C'2019, was recently featured in an ESSENCE magazine article and tells her story about how she turned her hardships of  being in foster care for a good portion of her life into attending her dream school.

In the ESSENCE article, "From Foster Care To Spelman: Graduating Senior Tiana Barnwell Shares her Story of Determination," written by Breanna Edwards, Barnwell said she wants people to realize that, "Their situation does not define them. Sometimes the struggles that you are dealt are the building blocks of your life. You don’t have to let it break you, but you can use that to build yourself up, to create your image, to create a story. That’s what I did."

tiana barnwell 3Barnwell is a political science major who will cross the stage of the Georgia International Convention Center with her classmates at the College's 132nd Commencement on May 19, 2019, at 3 p.m.

While at Spelman, she served as a vice president, a communications coordinator, and a honor roll and Dean’s List scholar. Barnwell says she has exceeded expectations and goals by being attentive and proactive in everything she dedicates herself to -- from academics to internships, volunteer opportunities and student organizations at Spelman.

A New York native, Barnwell believes that the ability to drive innovation and remain versatile is key, as she offers surprising new and original insights while being able to give unique and out-of-the-box viewpoints and ideas from different angles. She is driven by passion and has aggressive standards that yield tireless results. She has served as brand ambassador for New Belgium Brewing, an AT&T Digital, Retail, & Care Communications intern, and has a job lined up as an incoming operations analyst at Goldman Sachs upon graduation.

She told ESSENCE that her long-term goal to get a Ph.D. in hotel management and open a chain of hotels in underserved communities.
