Political Science Majors Participate in Political and Civic Engagement Conference

February 2019

Nathalie Borgella, C’2019Nathalie Borgella, C’2019, (pictured) and Jamila Griffin, C’2020, participated in the annual National Campaign for Political and Civic Engagement Conference, sponsored by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School in February.

This is the second time Spelman students have participated in the annual conference, said Fatemeh Shafiei, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Political Science.

The conference featured panels focusing on best practices in voter turnout as well as structural barriers to voting. The intercollegiate conference aims to catalyze broader student participation in political dialogue on ways to increase voting and mobilization among young people. Borgella and Griffin attended sessions in which participants discussed strategies to address barriers to voting and ways to foster civic engagement on campuses.
