Spelman’s Dual Degree Engineering Program Celebrates 50 Years

November 2018

Dual Degree Engineering at SpelmanSpelman’s Dual Degree Engineering Program began as a cooperative agreement between the Atlanta University Center and Georgia Institute of Technology. Today it has grown to include 14 other engineering partner schools from across the country. This academic year marks the 50th anniversary of DDEP.

The celebration, DDEP50, began in October with a lecture featuring DDEP alumna, Nikita Patterson, Ph.D., C'93, presenting, “The Life of a Spelman DDEP Engineer,” and also will include activities during Engineers Week, Feb. 18-22, 2019.

DDEP affords students the opportunity to obtain both a liberal arts education and a professional engineering education. In the program, the student spends a minimum of three academic years at Spelman and two more at a participating engineering school. Upon completion of all requirements, the student is simultaneously awarded a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
