July 2018

leadership alliance logoAsia Reese, C’2021, may be one of the youngest students in her summer research program, but she is not intimidated.

Reese, a comparative women's studies major from Baton Rouge, Louisiana is working in the Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Humanities Collaboratory this summer as part of Leadership Alliance’s First Year Research Experience program.

Reese, Kayla Smith, C’2021, Gabriella Gladney, C’2021, and Emily Laurore, C’2021, are all participating in the FYRE Program, funded through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Titus Foundation.

“The program was developed to ensure that students who are interested in research have early access at leading institutions,” said Cynthia Neal Spence, Ph.D., C’78, director of Spelman’s Social Justice Fellows and UNCF/Mellon programs.

Smith, who is working in the John Hay Library archives at Brown University, encourages her classmates to participate in summer programs like Leadership Alliance.

“They are life changing,” said Smith.

Gladney and Laurore are both working at the University of Virginia. All four will participate in the Leadership Alliance National Symposium in late July.
