Dance Performance and Choreography Lecturer Lauds Spelman’s Contributions to a Robust Year of Dance in Atlanta

January 2018

Kathleen WessellKathleen Wessel, lecturer in the Department Dance Performance and Choreography, served as a critic offering expert commentary on the year in Atlanta’s vigorous dance scene. In an ArtsATL article published Dec. 28, 2017, Wessel engaged in a detailed discussion with ArtsATL dance editor Cynthia Perry about how the art form is contributing to the city’s creative culture.

The dialogue included Spelman College’s contributions to the continued proliferation of dance through new works by T. Lang, assistant professor and chair of dance and director of Spelman Dance Theater, Julie B. Johnson, Ph.D., lecturer in the dance department, and Charmaine Minniefield, lecturer in the Department of Art & Visual Culture. The collaboration between Minniefield and Dr. Johnson produced outdoor African diaspora dances for Atlanta audiences. “This year’s collaborations, especially among artists working in multimedia forms, renewed my faith in the sustainability of dance in Atlanta,” said Wessel in the article.
