Dr. M. Bahati Kuumba Helps Prepare the Next Generation of Scholar-Activists

May 2017

kuumbateachFor scholar-activist M. Bahati Kuumba, Ph.D., the Women’s Research and Resource Center’s mission of promoting Black feminist teaching, scholarship and activism “is what I do and what I am.”

As professor of Comparative Women’s Studies and associate director of the Women’s Center, Dr. Kuumba mentors the next generation of scholar-activists. Her classes include “The Black Female Body,” “Women and Social Resistance Movements,” and “Feminist Qualitative Research Methodologies.”

In addition, she facilitates the Toni Cade Bambara Scholars/Writers/Activism Program and annual conference that engages students from all majors in consciousness-raising lectures, dialogues and projects. She also serves as a faculty advisor to several student organizations, including the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, Afrekete, SisterFire Open Mic and the TCB Collective.

“The students are the life of the Women’s Center,” said Dr. Kuumba, who has worked at Spelman for 17 years. “They have a passion for championing human and women’s rights.”

A foodie and avid arts patron, she spends her free time engaged in international travel for research on women of the African Diaspora, enjoying great cuisine (Thai and Ethiopian dishes are favorites) and attending theater, jazz concerts and dance performances, especially when her daughter, Tendayi Kuumba, C’2010, is dancing.
