Glee Club Auditions

The Spelman College Glee Club is open by audition to all students of the Spelman College community. The Glee Club is the premier performance organization for the College and sings for most campus events. The Glee Club accepts members from various disciplines and varying levels of musical knowledge.

The Glee Club is considered a class and each member must be registered for one or non-credit hours. The Glee Club meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

To become a member of the Spelman College Glee Club, an audition is required. Auditions for the Glee Club typically take place during New Student Orientation prior to the start of classes in the fall semester. Auditions are evaluated by music faculty and select student leadership. The audition is an evaluation process that provides an opportunity for each student to demonstrate performance ability. All candidates will be examined for tonal memory, ability to match pitch, and vocal quality. Vocal range may be determined in the audition, as well. Though ability to read music is not required, sight-singing ability may also be evaluated.  Candidates will be notified of acceptance prior to the first rehearsal.

What to Prepare

Candidates are asked to prepare one minute of any song that best showcases their voice.  Songs must be sung a capella. A short interview will be conducted to get to know each candidate. Sight-singing ability may best tested to gauge existing musical knowledge. Sight-singing is not required to be a member of the Glee Club.

Scheduling an Audition

Candidates will only be seen by appointment. Typically, auditions are held during New Student Orientation or the start of the semester. If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact Valentine Williamson, program coordinator of the Spelman College Glee Club at

Virtual Audition Tips

  • Make sure you read the ‘Glee Club Auditions’ page thoroughly so that you are prepared.
  • Use a quiet space that has good acoustics. A small rehearsal space or large living room are also fine. Please be mindful of lighting and that a lighting source is behind the camera. Please limit background noises, if possible.
  • Whatever equipment you are using, try to find a tripod or steady place so that your video isn’t shaky. Also, make sure we can hear and see you! We want to hear you clearly in the frame.
  • Be sure to practice. Ask your private teacher, conductor or parent for help to ensure you sound your best! We suggested that you record yourself singing in your audition space to get an idea what the evaluating faculty will see and hear.
  • Please join the Zoom Meeting at least 10 minutes early.
  • Make sure you speak slowly on camera. Sometime nerves can take over in an audition. Relax, and be yourself.  We will ask you to introduce yourself. Please include your name, classification, major and hometown in your introduction. We may also ask you to share your experience and musical goals/aspirations.
