Phi Beta Delta Membership

Membership Eligibility

Eligibility criteria for faculty and staff, and students are outlined below.

Faculty and Staff (American- or Foreign-born)

Faculty and staff should fulfill a combination of the following criteria:

  1. Experience in teaching, lecturing, and/or research in international affairs.
  2. Experience in organizing and conducting study experiences for students in foreign countries.
  3. Extensive international travels.
  4. Significant involvement in international activities on campus.
  5. Experience in advising student groups focused on international issues.
  6. Command of a foreign language.
  7. Active involvement in international organizations such as the Carter Center, the Georgia Council for International Visitors, Alliance Francaise, etc.

Students (American- or Foreign-born)

Students should fulfill a combination of the following criteria:

  1. Junior or senior status, and cumulative 3.2 Cumulative GPA
  2. Significant involvement in international activities on campus such as, foreign language associations, international associations, etc.
  3. Extensive international travel.
  4. Command of a foreign language.
  5. Active involvement in international organizations such as the Carter Center, the Georgia Council for International Visitors, Alliance Francaise, etc.

Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society Inducts 32 New Members

Spelman’s Beta Omega chapter of the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars held its 22nd induction ceremony on April 26 in the Manley Center Atrium.

With the theme “Continuing a Legacy to Recognize and Encourage International Scholarship,” this year’s
ceremony focused on the culture of India. The ceremony opened with remarks by chapter president Pushpa Parekh, Ph.D., English professor and chair of the African Diaspora and the World program, and featured classical and Bollywood fusion Indian dance performances.

The 2017 inductees included 22 students and 10 faculty and staff members. In addition, President Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., was inducted as an honorary member.

Phi Beta Delta membership is open to faculty, staff, visiting scholars and students who have demonstrated scholarly achievement in international education.
