Student Profiles: Kristyn McKinney, C'2016

Kristyn McKinney copyA self-taught artist from Fairburn, Ga., McKinney is the second recipient of the Darlyne Atkinson Killian Endowed Scholarship. In the tradition of her predecessor, McKinney creates landscapes, portraits, and scenes from everyday life, using a variety of materials from charcoal and pastels to watercolors and acrylics. She has attended summer programs for young artists at Atlanta’s historic art community, the Goat Farm, exhibited her work at the Georgia Aquarium, and donated several pieces to One Loved Generation, an annual art fundraiser that supports a local homeless shelter. She also has volunteered as a docent at Clark Atlanta University’s art gallery.

Several of McKinney’s friends suggested that she choose a field more lucrative than art, but like Darlyne Killian, she is following her passion. “The scholarship encourages me,” she says. “It shows me that people here do appreciate art and artists.”
