Class of 2022 Valedictorians and Salutatorian

Spelman College's Top 10 Graduates

  • Spelman College Valedictorian Ashli Chicks
    Ashli Chicks, a chemistry major from Maryland, is a member of NSBE, the National Society of Black Engineers; the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society; and the Spelman College Chemistry Club. In May of 2022, she was inducted into Epsilon of Georgia, the Spelman chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. While at the College, Chicks spent a summer in Japan and used computational chemistry to study small molecules in the Van Vleet Lab.
  • Spelman College Valedictorian Asja Woodard
    On May 15, 2022, Asja Woodard will receive recognition as one of five valedictorians of the graduating class of 2022. This will not be the first time she will receive recognition for her excellence as a student. She also graduated as valedictorian of her high school class in Omaha, Nebraska. However, it will be the first time her achievement as a student will be content for a national story about five students at Spelman, a historically Black college for women that inspires students to achieve, even during a national pandemic.
  • Spelman College Class of 2022 Valedictorian Mckenzie Clarke
    McKenzie Clarke, a senior English major from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is a member of the Ethel Waddell Githi Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and a newly inducted member into Phi Beta Kappa. A UNCF-Mellon Mays fellow, Clarke will enter Rutgers University in the fall of 2022 to pursue a Ph.D. in English.
  • Spelman Senior Nailah Barnes Receives Fulbright Award
    Valedictorian Nailah Barnes has done more in four years at Spelman than what most individuals might never do in a lifetime. She has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and around the globe, researching and curating museums in the Caribbean, in France and in Africa.
  • Spelman College Valedictorian Taylor Dews
    On May 15, 2022, at the Spelman Commencement of the Class of 2022, Taylor Dews of Chesapeake, Virginia will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Anthropology with a minor in Spanish. She will also be recognized as one of five valedictorians in the Class of 2022, a first in the history of commencements at Spelman College.
  • Spelman College Salutatorian Jamie Crawford
    “I was molded by Spelman to be ambitious, adaptable and self-aware” are the words Salutatorian Jamie Crawford chooses to describe her journey from the moment she entered Spelman College as a first-year student to today as she serves as salutatorian of the graduating class of 2022.
Class of 2022, your plans for graduate programs, fellowships and positions in healthcare, education, research and the technology industry are inspiring. We know this has been a year like no other; but you have been steadfast in your drive toward excellence.
