It took Bintou Bakusa Jobarteh, C’2019, a while to adjust to college life. After taking a 14-hour bus ride from the South Bronx, New York, to Atlanta, she moved into Abby Rockefeller Hall without the assistance of her family members, who were unable to accompany her to campus.

While at Spelman College, Zayd Zori, C’2019, blazed her own path by creating her own major – Culture Studies: Interactive Media and Game Design.

After taking a biology course during her freshman year, Ariana Benson, C’2019, realized she wasn’t interested in body mechanics. She wanted to do more than treat patients, she wanted to be able to tell their stories.

Gabrielle Price, C’2019, was on track to become a physician before she completed her second year at Spelman.

In third-grade, a pigtailed Kristen Walker was told she was not ready to tackle advanced academic courses in her elementary school. Fast forward a decade, and Walker, a political science and Spanish double major, is co-salutatorian of Spelman’s class of 2019.

Kara Cobb, C'2019, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, decided to attend Spelman College after a visit to the institution during her sophomore year of high school. She immediately felt a connection with the campus and knew one day Spelman would become her home.

Mikia Frazier, C'2019, senior class president, chose to attend Spelman because of its dedication to strengthening Black women and focusing on helping students understand the intersectionality of Black womanhood.

Briana Spivey, C'2019, is a native of Lithonia, Georgia. She made the choice to attend Spelman because she knew there was no better institution for cultivating and nurturing her into a Black woman scholar, leader and change maker.

Kyran Brooks is a First-Generation Scholar student from Waldorf, Maryland. As an only child, she chose Spelman for its sisterhood and legacy of producing phenomenal Black women.
