Spelman College Class of 2018

A Sneak Peek at the Class of 2018

We have so many stories about the great work members of the class of 2018 are doing, but here are just a few from the Our Stories area on

Phallon Foxworth Honors Grandmother with Book Scholarship

Spelman's Phallon FoxworthDetroit native Phallon Foxworth, C’2018, is devoted to continuing the legacies of the women who reared her by helping students in need. In March 2017, the psychology major established the Rosa’s Angel Scholarship in honor of her grandmother Rosa Blanding, a stage 4 breast cancer survivor living with dementia.

The award supports a first-year student from the Detroit area enrolled at any four-year institution. The first recipient of a book scholarship was Jasmine Hollins, C’2021.

“It felt right to name the scholarship after one of the people who taught me about helping others,” Foxworth said. “Unfortunately, my grandmother can no longer remember my name but refers to me as her angel, which was the inspiration for the scholarship’s name.”

Two more Detroit students will receive Rosa’s Angel Scholarships in June 2018. In the fall, Foxworth will pursue a master’s degree in mental health counseling and behavioral medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

Supporting and Inspiring Youth

In an article published in the Michigan Chronicle, Foxworth said, "“It is my goal and passion to support and inspire youth to pursue a college education.  I’ve been blessed to have the support of my family to accomplish my educational goals with the hopes of attaining my Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a mental health concentration."

While at Spelman, Foxworth was a member of the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology, Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific Honor Society, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
