A Sneak Peek at the Class of 2018

We have so many stories about the great work members of the class of 2018 are doing, but here are just a few from the Our Stories area on

Honors Program President Melaine Ferdinand-King will Pursue her Ph.D.

Spelman graduate Melaine Ferdinand-KingMelaine Jasmine Ferdinand-King was born in Silver Spring, Maryland and raised in Brick, New Jersey. She chose to attend  Spelman because of its  emphasis on excellence and success of Black women who understand the importance of racial uplift and sisterhood.

A sociology major with a focus in African Diaspora Studies, Ferdinand-King served as president of the Spelman College Honors Program and as member of several organizations on campus, including the Sophomore Class Council, National Council of Negro Women, Morehouse Business Association, Spelhouse Rotaract Club, and the Blueprint Newspaper. She is  also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Eta Kappa Chapter.

Upon graduation, Ferdinand-King will pursue her Ph.D. in Africana Studies at Brown University as a fully funded graduate student.She is primarily interested in cultural sociology, social inequality, poverty, and public policy. She is also passionate about research pertaining to the educational experience of African-American students and the identities of individuals of African-descent internationally; especially women of color in Latin & Central America and the Caribbean. Her ultimate goal is to become the president of an HBCU.
