Spelman College Class of 2018

A Sneak Peek at the Class of 2018

We have so many stories about the great work members of the class of 2018 are doing, but here are just a few from the Our Stories area on spelman.edu.

Abiana Adamson Takes Her Seat at the Head of the Class as 2018 Valedictorian

Spelman class of 2018 valedictorianAbiana Adamson, C'2018, is the valedictorian for the class of 2018. With a 3.94 GPA, the Minneapolis, Minnesota native boasts a long list of academic honors and achievements including serving as executive editor and founder of Continuum, the first interdisciplinary undergraduate research journal at Spelman. After graduation, she plans to pursue a medical degree and a masters degree in public policy.

A member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program, Adamson chose Spelman because of its uniqueness. "I needed to go to a school that was built for me in mind; a school where I’d see my history and experience reflected back to me and Spelman was exactly that place," she said.

Adamson was recently inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and is a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies. She is also the recipient of the Roy Martinez Book Award, the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students Travel Award, and an Emory STEM Symposium participant.

Through various internships, Adamson was also able to hone what she learned in the classroom in the real world. As an intern at the Feminist Women's Health Center she engaged community members in discussions about safe sex practices and developed an eight-week leadership training workshop for Black women. At the Center for Disease Control in the Division of Reproductive Health, she conducted research on the cost burden of delivery hospitalizations related to severe maternal morbidity.

Astute at parsing analytical data, Adamson also interned at Moody's Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania where she completed seven different macroeconomic projects using several statistical programs, and crafted a database and ranking methodology for an analytical paper on health and climate West Chester. Her Précis report on macro trends was published on economy.com.

Abamson plans to use the knowledge she is gaining inside and outside of the classroom to help reform America’s healthcare system.
