Etta Z. Falconer Lecture Series at Spelman College Named in honor of Dr. Etta Z. Falconer, the Falconer Scholar in Residence is a female scholar of color who has shown a commitment to increasing gender and racial equity in STEM.  

Dr. Etta Z. Falconer was a visionary whose entire career was dedicated to the advancement of Black women in STEM. Dr. Falconer was largely responsible for developing most of the departments in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) at Spelman College and is recognized nationally for her contributions to the retention of underrepresented groups in the STEM disciplines, particularly in the mathematical sciences. In her honor, the College's mathematics department also hosts the Etta Z. Falconer Lecture Series each year. 

Selection as the Falconer-Scholar-in-Residence, is an opportunity to spend up to a year in the unparalleled environment of Spelman College and share your experience and research with our students and faculty.

Applications for the Spelman College Center of Excellence for Minority Women in STEM (COE-MWS) Falconer Scholar-in-Residence opportunity are sought from exceptional individuals who, through their record of scholarship, teaching, mentoring and service, as well as their skills, experiences and areas of scholarship, can substantially advance STEM innovation at Spelman College.

  • Candice Price Falconer Scholar in Residence
    Candice Price, Ph.D., is thrilled to be the inaugural Center of Excellence for Minority Women in STEM (COE‐MWS) Falconer Scholar‐in‐Residence at Spelman College. Dr. Price is currently an associate professor in the department of Mathematics at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Born and raised in California, Dr. Price earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Chico (2003) and a master's degree from San Francisco State University (2007) both in mathematics. She earned her doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa (2012) under the advisement of Isabel Darcy, Ph.D.
