August 2019

Erika BryantIn her role as executive director of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., Erika Bryant, C'89, is committed to increasing the availability of high-quality public education in the nation's capital.

Founded in 1998 by her mother, Linda Moore, and named in honor of her grandmother, Elsie Whitlow Stokes, an elementary teacher for 36 years in Arkansas, the school prepares culturally diverse elementary students to be leaders, scholars and responsible citizens who are committed to social justice.

Bryant’s experience at Spelman influenced her approach to her position. “I knew that my professors were genuinely interested in my development as a student and a human being,” she said. “I carry that into my work now; not just with the students, but also with the faculty and staff.”
