Alumna Credits Spelman with Preparing Her Success

November 2018

Taylor YarbroughTaylor Yarbrough, C’2013, considers her time at Spelman great training ground. Recently, Yarbrough was named associate director of global culture and inclusion for Foote, Cone, and Belding (FCB), a global marketing communications firm.

In her new role, Yarbrough is charged with continuing FCB’s commitment to diversity and multiculturalism among its staff, which includes creating an equitable, respectful and inclusive workplace. Spelman, she said, made her a better human, which equipped her with perspectives that have made her effective in her line of work.

Prior to joining FCB, Yarbrough was manager of diversity & inclusion strategy and talent development at the American Association of Advertising Agencies where she

directed the ad industry's largest and longest-running national talent development program (MAIP), with 200+ fellows annually and 3,000+ alumni worldwide.

“Spelman exposed me to the wide range of diversity among Black women in America, and prevented me from falling prey to ‘the single story,’” said Yarbrough who majored in psychology. “The danger of the single story is that it perpetuates stereotypes, enables discriminatory legislation, and promotes toxic work environments.”
