Dr. Valerie Camille Jones Honored for Her Trailblazing Teaching Style

Spelman Alumna Valerie Camille JonesAward-winning math teacher Valerie Camille Jones, Ph.D., C’2000, discusses connecting with students while remaining true to herself in a recent article on the online news site UrbanGeekz. Dr. Jones, a middle school teacher at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, is a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation’s highest honor for math and science teachers.

In the article, she shares her love for connecting with students on a personal and cultural level to help make math relevant to their lives. The self-proclaimed “geek,” gamer, movie buff, and dance enthusiast incorporates performing arts, real-world connections and video games into her lessons. She credits her instructors at Spelman for instilling confidence and pride in her cultural heritage. “The teachers there were connected to me,” she told UrbanGeekz. “They really spoke to me and they taught me about myself as a Black woman.”
