Kathryn Dungy Drives Home the Value of Studying Abroad

by Angela Wood | February 04, 2020

Kathryn Dungy, C'91Spelman alumna Kathryn Dungy, Ph.D., C'91, an associate professor of Latin American and Caribbean history at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont, has been traveling around the world since she was six months old. It's no wonder then that she has traveled to 52 countries and territories and has lived in Nigeria, Puerto Rico and Spain.

Dungy specializes in the study of race, class, and gender in the Atlantic World, exploring the concept of freedom in the midst of slave societies in the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States. She has published a book that examines a distinctive population of free people of color in 19th-century Puerto Rico; has contributed to numerous academic journals, edited volumes, and encyclopedias; and has spoken at a wide range of conferences and scholarly meetings. She previously taught at the University of Vermont and the New College of Florida, and has served on the board of directors for the Tampa Bay History Center.

Additionally, Dungy serves on the Board of Directors for the Council on International Educational Exchange CIEE, a nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization that transforms lives and builds bridges between individuals and nations by sponsoring a wide variety of opportunities for the exchange of ideas and experiences.

She holds a doctorate and master’s degree in history from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree in history and sociology from Spelman where she graduated magna cum laude. Dungy is also an alum of the CIEE semester study abroad program and spent her junior year in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
