Junior Plans to Sponsor Two Ghanaian Girls for Her 21st Birthday

November 2019

Akua F. TemengFor her 21st birthday, Akua F. Temeng, C’2021, wanted to do something unique. Through BASICS International, the chemistry major plans to support the education of two young women in Ghana by contributing to their school tuition, lunch, after school care and health insurance. BASICS International is a non-profit based in Ghana that promotes literacy, economic empowerment, wellness and social inclusion.

Temeng’s time as a Sustainable Spelman intern inspired the goal. “Service is in the stitching of Spelman’s culture,” said Temeng. “As the child of a Ghanaian immigrant, for which I am grateful, I have the unique opportunity to support these girls.” Her goal is to raise $2,100 before December. Each student, chosen based on their age and corresponding grade, will receive $1,050.
