Women in STEM Summer Bridge Accelerator (WiSTEM)

The WiSTEM Summer Bridge Accelerator is a seven-week academically intensive program for entering first-year students who are pursuing degrees in mathematics, dual degree engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, biology and economics. The WiSTEM program, now in its 10th year, is typically held on Spelman’s campus. However, this summer,  the program will be held online due to COVID-19.

The program components include credit-bearing courses (mathematics and computer programming), an introduction to the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) in data analytics, and college-preparation enrichment activities. It includes targeted tutoring by student peer mentors, mentoring by STEM professionals, and academic advising by the program co-directors and staff. The program continues during the 2020-21 academic year with a residential learning community and continued advising and mentoring.

The program covers the full cost for student participants (tuition, e-books, materials and other resources) and provides a stipend of $500 for their full participation. Students are expected to provide their own supplies (laptops, paper, pencils, etc.) and access to the Internet.

  • Application Deadline: Friday, April 23, 2021
  • Notice of Program Acceptance: Friday, May 14, 2021
  • Program Cost: None. Students will be paid a modest stipend for their participation in the program.

This program is only open to students who will enroll at Spelman in Fall 2021.
