Kelsey Gallant, 2017 Goldwater Honorable Mention
Kelsey Gallant, C'2018, is a 2017 Honorable Mention recipient of the Barry M. Goldwater Foundation Scholarship. Currently, Kelsey is at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a Cancer Research Training Award Fellow who was recently awarded the iCURE Scholarship to conduct research in cancer genomics at NIH's National Cancer Institute (NCI).
As an undergraduate, Kelsey conducted research on next generation sequencing, bioinformatics, and breast cancer metabolomics as a participant in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) General Medical Sciences RISE Program at Spelman College. Her research skills were strengthened by a summer internship at Genentech in South San Francisco, California where she helped to design immunotherapeutics for neurogenerative disorders and cancer.
Kelsey's passion for research began in high school when she began studying TGF-beta signaling and pancreatic stellate cell activation in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma at Duke University. Invigorated by the intersections of discovery research, biotechnology, and advancement in precision medicine, Kelsey aspires to enter a competitive MD/PhD program earning a Ph.D. in Genetics with a clinical focus in oncology. Kelsey earned a BS in biology at Spelman College in 2018 where she co-founded and served as review team leader of Continuum, the Spelman College Undergraduate Research Journal.
