A Capacity-Building Opportunity for Minority-Serving Institutions and other STEM Education Research Organizations

Atlanta, GA
June 16 - 17, 2017

Atlanta MSI Life STEM Team: Leyte L. Winfield, Viveka Brown and Pamela Stegall
NSF Award No.: 1739251

The Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network and MERAssociates, LLC (MERA) invite you to participate in capacity building workshops designed to help minority serving institutions, and other research organizations, learn about and share effective models of intervention that will broaden participation of underrepresented minority students in STEM fields, particularly in life science and bioscience. The workshops will provide excellent opportunities for sharing best practices about preparing and retaining underrepresented minority students in STEM fields, developing networking to promote collaborative and/or interdisciplinary research, and learning about funding opportunities across the Directorate for Education and Human Resources.

The workshops will feature sessions led by national experts in STEM education research and academic-focused interventions for improving STEM education from the early grades through the undergraduate level. NSF Program Officers will be available throughout the workshops to offer technical assistance and support.

To participate, registrants must sign up as a 3-4 member institutional team whose members must include faculty/administrator representation from life science or biosciences. Specifically, team members must include: (1) a STEM dean or chair; (2) a STEM faculty member; (3) an SPO/SRO with administrative authority over grants and sponsored programs; and, if possible, (4) an educational researcher or social/behavioral scientist, knowledgeable of various frameworks and methods of analysis. It is expected that at least 100 participants comprising approximately 30 institutional teams will attend each workshop.   Participant support will cover costs associated with travel, ground transportation, lodging, meals, and a participant stipend for each team member pursuant to allowable limits in accordance with federal and state guidelines.

Please submit your workshop registration as soon as possible. Note: The workshop registration deadline has been extended to Friday, May 26, 2017, however for priority consideration, please complete your registration by Friday, May 19, 2017 to allow sufficient time to review your team's application and to complete travel arrangements.
