Chinese Studies

According to most statistics, Chinese, specifically Mandarin, is the most widely spoken language in the world. To ensure that Spelman women have the tools needed to interact within this social and professional network, the College is proud to offer these Chinese language and culture courses:

CHN 101, 102

ELEMENTARY CHINESE (4, 4 )These courses are designed to help students develop the fundamental language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin Chinese. Emphases are on pronunciation and the tones, the writing of Chinese characters, and the basic structure and patterns of Chinese grammar. Relevant cultural background will also be introduced. Limited to students with no or little Chinese language background.

CHN 201, 201

INTERMEDIATE CHINESE (4, 4) These courses help students continue to develop language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese. Students will improve their communicative competence in daily topics at a higher level. Cultural background will also be introduced. Prerequisite: Elementary Chinese or equivalent proficiency.

CHN 345

UNDERSTANDING MORDERN CHINA (4)Taught in English. A survey of modern China from the Manchu conquest of 1644 to the present with an emphasis on contemporary China. Situating China in the global environment, this course explores the birth of modern China, the land, the people, Chinese philosophy and religion, business culture and etiquette, food and fashion, popular culture, China’s economical, social, and cultural transformations through its modernization and globalization. No prerequisite.
