Quotes of Glee: From Our Hearts to Yours

"When I first came to Spelman, I felt that familiar feeling of loneliness that many students suffer. I felt lost in my place in the world and unsure that there was anyone who truly supported me. Thankfully, I was wrong. Dr. Johnson has always believed in me and has demanded excellence from me even when I didn't it demand it from myself. It is because of him that I am the musician I am today, and I am incredibly grateful to him for continuing to push me to always be better." Brooke Joynes, senior music major from Durham, N.C.

Well Done! Dr. Kevin Johnson Reflects on 20 Years of Musical Excellence at Spelman

Kevin JohnsonIn retrospect, my 20 years in service to Spelman College have been filled with joy. My decision to commit my professional career in education to Spelman has turned out great!  As a young aspiring doctoral candidate, I hoped to become a conductor at a large majority institution for mixed voices. God had another plan for me and my future.

Instead, I was blessed to be able to share not only knowledge of my musical expertise but I have been able to engage African Americans in the pursuit of excellence. I have been able to be a part of the elevation of our institution and of women of color to renowned and unmatched importance in the world. For this, I am grateful.

Over the years, I have fallen in love with Spelman and its people, its meaning, its purpose and its gift of itself to me. For better or worse, I remain and stand committed to excellence in all that I do as a member of the mighty Spelman College. Spelman, thy name we praise.
