Beginning in the fall 2019, the Spelman College education department will begin offering a teacher certification preparation program for individuals desiring to receive teacher certification in Georgia.

About the Program

The teacher certification preparation program is a year-long program designed for college graduates from Spelman and outside institutions who wish to earn teacher certification. Successful completion of the coursework prepares students to receive state certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC).

Teacher Certification Offerings

Teacher certification programs are available in the following content areas:

  • Secondary Education (grades 6-12)
    Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics,
    Physics or Political Science
  • Pre-Kindergarten -- 12th Grade Education
    Spanish or Music

Admission Prerequisites

  • A college degree in a teacher certification area (or a college degree with 21 acceptable credit hours in desired content area)
  • A passing score on the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) Program Admissions Assessment or proof of exemption based on one of the following (verification must be provided):
    • SAT Score >1000 (combined total on Verbal and Math)
    • ACT Score >43 (combined total on English and Math)
  • A passing score on Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) in content area of certification
  • A minimum 2.85 cumulative GPA from an accredited undergraduate institution
  • Complete an Intro/Orientation to Education course by August 2019 for the Fall 2019 cohort
