Spelman LINC Scholar Akua TemengChemistry major Akua Temeng is an Ethell Waddell Githi Honors Program member who excels inside and outside of the classroom.

The Wilmington, Delaware native is involved in the various organizations including: Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars Member, Golden Key International Honor Society, Sustainable Spelman Intern, UNRCE Youth Network Ambassador, GlobeMed Member, Toastmasters Member, Atlanta Student Sustainability Council Member, Spelman College Chemistry Club, Spelman College African Student Association, and Freshman Reaching Excellence with Spelman’s Help.

A Forbes Under 30 Scholar, Temeng is committed to helping those who desire to excel academically. For her 21st birthday, she wanted to do something unique. Through BASICS International, she supported the education of two young women in Ghana by contributing to their school tuition, lunch, after school care and health insurance. BASICS International is a non-profit based in Ghana that promotes literacy, economic empowerment, wellness and social inclusion.

Temeng’s time as a Sustainable Spelman intern inspired the goal. “Service is in the stitching of Spelman’s culture,” said Temeng. “As the child of a Ghanaian immigrant, for which I am grateful, I have the unique opportunity to support these girls.” Her goal is to raise $2,100 before December. Each student, chosen based on their age and corresponding grade, received $1,050.
