Sixteen Spelman students recently participated in a summer study abroad program in Ferrara, Italy. During the month-long program in June, students took two classes – “La Bella Vita: Food, Culture, & Society” and “Survival Italian.”
They stayed with host families, took historical tours and cooking classes, and went on overnight trips to Florence and Venice. The program, set up through the Council on International Educational Exchange, also included a study of the history and politics of modern Italy.
The trip inspired English major Adesuwa H. Joseph, C’2019, and philosophy major Jordyn A. Walston, C’2019, to start #TheBlackGirlTravelFiles, a multifaceted Instagram project to encourage Black women to travel abroad and blog about their experiences. Program co-directors Margery Ganz, Ph.D., professor emerita of history, and Tinaz Pavri, Ph.D., division chair for social sciences and education and chair of the Asian Studies Program, accompanied the students on the trip.
