Dr. Danielle Dickens Recognized for Her Innovative Teaching Practice

September 2019

Danielle Dickens, PhDDanielle Dickens, Ph.D., C’2009, assistant professor of psychology, received the 2019 Mary Roth Walsh Teaching the Psychology of Women Award during the American Psychological Association Convention.

Named for the late Mary Roth Walsh, the award recognizes individuals who have devised a creative approach, exercise or assignment for increasing diversity in teaching the psychology of women or gender.

Dr. Dickens’ “Telling Their Story” activity in her psychology of women course led to her being honored.

“The aim of the assignment is to help students critically think about and acknowledge someone’s gender identity,” said Dr. Dickens. “Spelman not only gave me the tools for success but instilled in me the importance of telling our own story. Now, as a faculty member at my alma mater, I have a greater commitment to increasing diversity broadly in the psychology field.”
