Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall Named to National Board and Honored with Diversity Award

June 2018

Beverly Guy-SheftallThe National Women’s History Museum has named Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Ph.D., C'66, to its board of directors. The announcement was made June 5, 2018. As a member of the board, Dr. Guy-Sheftall, the Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women’s Studies and founding director of the Spelman College Women’s Research and Resource Center, will lend her voice and expertise to the mission and purpose of NWHM by sharing the triumphs of the women who shaped American history.

The appointment came just a few days prior to Dr. Guy-Sheftall being honored by the American Association of Access, Equity and Diversity. During their annual meeting in Atlanta, on June 7, she received the Arthur A. Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award for her lifetime commitment to promoting and advocating for diversity and equity. William Harvey, Ph.D., a member of AAAED, nominated Dr. Guy-Sheftall for the award.

“Given that she has had an extensive and stellar career in addressing issues within the Black community, and most specifically Black women, I felt that she would be the kind of person we should acknowledge,” said Dr. Harvey, adding that Dr. Guy-Sheftall was much of the reason he encouraged his daughter Adia Harvey Wingfield, C'98, to apply to Spelman. “I have always been very impressed in her singular leadership.”
