NSF Funds AUC Initiative to Promote Tech Entrepreneurship

February 2017

corpsThe National Science Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to launch an Innovation Corps site in the Atlanta University Center to boost inclusive entrepreneurship in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

The AUC is one of eight new I-Corps sites selected around the country to pilot new approaches and partnerships to increase participation and promote inclusion of underrepresented populations in the NSF National Innovation Network.

The I-Corps program will support mentored, team-based strategies for commercializing established research. A Howard University team – part of the Howard-Hampton University I-Corps site – will introduce AUC faculty to the I-Corps curriculum and Lean Startup methods of teaching researchers how to move scientific discoveries from the lab into the marketplace.

Spelman’s I-Corps planning team members are Leyte Winfield, Ph.D., interim associate provost for research and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Angelino Viceisza, Ph.D., assistant professor of economics. Tiffany Bussey, founding director of the Morehouse College Entrepreneurship Center, is coordinating the initiative.
