English Professor to Participate in Langston Hughes Forum

October 2017

faculty_akibaharperDonna Akiba Sullivan Harper, Ph.D., Fuller E. Callaway Professor of English, will participate in the national forum, “Remembering Langston Hughes: His Art, Life and Legacy Fifty Years Later,” Nov. 10-11 at Princeton University. Dr. Harper, an internationally recognized Langston Hughes scholar, is the only HBCU faculty member invited to be a speaker at the conference, where she will give a lecture as part of the panel, "The Negro Artist and His Racial Mountains."

She will touch on some of Hughes’ essays and poems to emphasize his awareness of the diversity within the Black race. “I have been delighted to help sustain the memory and appreciation of Hughes’ life and work,” said Dr. Harper, who is a founder of the Langston Hughes Society. “I am also gratified to introduce Spelman students to Hughes in a semester-long, single-author course during the academic year.”
