Beverly Guy-Sheftall Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Ph.D, C’66, founding director of the Women’s Research and Resource Center and the Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women’s Studies, has been elected to the 237th class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Guy-Sheftall is one of 228 new members elected into the academy, which includes some of the world’s most accomplished scholars, scientists, writers and artists as well as civic, business and philanthropic leaders. Established in 1780, the academy is one of the nation’s oldest independent policy research centers and most prestigious honorary societies.

Other new academy members include philanthropist and singer-songwriter John Legend, award-winning actress Carol Burnett, Xerox Corporation board chair Ursula Burns, mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani and writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

“As a member of the academy, I look forward to joining Dr. Guy-Sheftall at the official ceremony in October in Cambridge, Massachusetts,” President Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., said in a letter to the Spelman community.“ Please join me in congratulating Dr. Guy-Sheftall on this important recognition of her invaluable teaching, scholarship and activism.” View a list of the 2017 Academy inductees.
