English Professor Recognized at International Poetry Contest

October 2016

Pushpa Parekh
Pushpa Parekh, Ph.D., English professor and director of the African Diaspora and the World program, recently was awarded third place for her poem, “Peace Is …” at the West Coast Tagore Festival near Vancouver, Canada.

Her poem was one of 10 finalists selected by the international poetry contest from submissions by poets from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. Dr. Parekh was invited to Vancouver in September to read her poem at the festival, organized by the Vancouver Tagore Society.

The festival honors Indian writer and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, a national leader in India’s independence movement. “I am excited and especially happy because I have always loved Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry and short stories,” said Dr. Parekh.
