Brandeis Marshall Receives NSF Grant to Train Faculty in Data Science

Brandeis Marshall, Ph.D., chair and associate professor of computer and information sciences, has been awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation in the amount of $399,903 for her project, “Data Science eXtension (DSX): Incorporating Data Science Fundamentals in the Curriculum at Spelman and Morehouse Colleges.”

This project will train faculty on data science principles, develop and implement data science curriculum at the undergraduate level and to broaden awareness of data science to underrepresented minorities at the bachelor’s level.  

Data science is emerging as a distinct interdisciplinary area of study, including but not limited to, applied statistics, biology, business analytics, business intelligence, chemistry, computer science, data analytics, data mining and information management. Gosha Kinnis, Ph.D., assistant professor in the computer science department at Morehouse College will serve as co-PI on this project.
