Faculty Highlights and Accomplishments

Dorian Brown Crosby

February 2016

Dorian Crosby
Dorian Crosby, Ph.D., director of cultural orientation at Spelman and assistant professor of political science, was a featured speaker at the DeKalb County Library's Doris K. Wells Heritage Festival celebrating Somali culture in Clarkston, Georgia. Crosby highlighted her many years of work with resettled refugees in Clarkston and the Somali community in her remarks on cultural inclusion. Open to the public, the celebration included refugees recounting their experiences of resettling into Clarkston, as well as poems written and recited by Somali elders and youth. On display were artifacts from Somali culture accompanied by Somalis who provided explanations for each of the more than 20 items. The festival is held in honor of the first African-American librarian in the DeKalb Public Library system who wanted all cultures in DeKalb embraced and celebrated for their unique contributions to society.
