About the QEP

The Quality Enhancement Plan is a vital part of the college’s reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The purpose of a QEP is to enhance overall institutional quality and effectiveness by focusing on a topic that improves student learning and/or the learning environment.

The Spelman College QEP

The Spelman College QEP topic is: Finding Your PLACE—Pathways to Life and Career and Excellence.

In this way, we can assist students to make suitable choices in both professional and personal life, leading to our ultimate goal for them—life and career success beyond Spelman College.

Finding Your PLACE will be conducted in phases, reflecting an integrated set of initiatives in support of the student learning and student success goals. As our primary tool to help students navigate these initiatives, we have established the Finding Your Place (FYP) Pathway. The FYP Pathway incorporates important milestones that guide students through experiences that are intended to enhance the student’s preparation for internship and a balanced post-baccalaureate life and career. We envision the FYP Pathway to be one element of structured mentoring conversations between students and advisors, a tool to prompt more in-depth discussions and thoughtfulness about career and life planning. As students engage the FYP Pathway, they will have options for customizing it to their interests and circumstances, and the opportunity to earn badges recognizing their accomplishments.


Assessment of progress on the QEP will feature evaluations of two levels of proximate goals, each expected to drive momentum toward the ultimate QEP goal of increased post-baccalaureate placement.

Finding Your PLACE Components

  • Guided conversations about life and career choices, such as “Women in the Workplace” and “Achieving Life Balance”
  • Technology Skills (data science)
  • Secure External internships and Research Experience
  • Internship Bootcamp—a short, preparatory curriculum for securing and excelling in external internship and research experiences.
  • Recruitment Bootcamp—a short, preparatory curriculum for securing the desired full-time employment, professional school enrollment, military enlistment, or other gainful occupation.
  • Informational interviews (“Go Sees – LinkedIn”) as a pathway milestone
  • Life and Career Development Plan
  • Resume, Cover Letter, Personal Statement to suit a variety of career interests
