Good News: U.S. News and World Report Rankings
September 11, 2018
Dear Spelman Community,
I write to share wonderful news: Spelman College has leaped 10 places on U.S. News and World Report’s list of the Best Liberal Arts Colleges for 2019, moving up to No. 51 from No. 61. At No. 51, we are tied with Agnes Scott, Dickinson and Rhodes colleges, as well as Furman University.
More good news: For the 12th year in a row, Spelman is ranked the No. 1 HBCU by U.S. News, which also included the College on its list of the 35 Most Innovative Schools.
I’d like to share congratulations and appreciation to the entire Spelman community for your efforts, which resulted in the increase in our rankings.
The recognition of our innovativeness comes at a time when we are developing an Innovation curriculum. The academic initiative is being led by the co-directors of our Innovation Lab, Jerry Volcy, Ph.D., the Brown-Simmons Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, and DeAngela Duff, associate professor in the Department of Art and Visual Culture, as well as Topper Carew, Ph.D., who is serving as an advisor from the MIT Media Lab.
To date, more than 200 faculty and student projects have been developed in our Innovation Lab, which will be the core of Spelman’s new academic building, the Center for Innovation and the Arts, that is currently under development.
Congratulations to everyone in the Spelman community who made the steady climb in the rankings possible.
Onward,
Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
President
