President's Letter to the Community

Welcome to Spelman College!

August 9, 2018

Greetings New Spelmanites,

Welcome to Spelman College! Everyone on campus -- faculty, staff, your Spelman sisters -- is excited about your arrival. We’ve spent the summer working to ensure your experience is nothing less than exceptional.

New Student Orientation is an opportunity to introduce you to the values and principles we hold dear. At the core of campus life is what we have for generations referred to as the Spelman Sisterhood. Sisterhood embodies our commitment to collaboration and compassion and a belief that we are stronger together. Over the next few days, you will begin to meet your classmates. They represent every type of scholar you can imagine. They are research scientists and creative artists, aspiring educators, attorneys, medical doctors, poets and journalists. They are Christians, Muslims, Buddhists and agnostic. They are straight, gay and exploring. Out of all of that diversity comes the unifying principle of Sisterhood that makes our campus a vibrant and dynamic community.

Academic excellence is another core Spelman value and in your early days and weeks you will meet Spelman faculty members. They are an extraordinary group. Committed to teaching and to excellence in their respective disciplines, even more importantly, they are committed to your academic success. Meet them. Get to know them. They are here for you.

In fact, every Spelman staff member and administrator is here for you. Each is here to guide you to leadership opportunities, student clubs, study and research abroad experiences, internships and work opportunities and service in the Atlanta community. You are now part of a community that places your success at center stage and will do all that we can to help you achieve your goals as a 21st century leader.

Since 1881, we have welcomed the best and the brightest scholars from around the world to Spelman. Here, they have found their voice, discovered their passions, and honed their intellectual skills. That legacy now belongs to you.

Again, welcome to Spelman.

I look forward to meeting you.

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
