Fana Ruth HaileSelassie is a senior at Spelman College pursuing a major in international studies with a minor in Spanish. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, HaileSelassie was raised in Durham, North Carolina. Throughout her matriculation at Spelman, she has served as a member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program Student Association (HPSA), the 77th Spelman Student Government Association (SSGA), and as a first-year residential adviser.

She has also worked to connect students interested in foreign policy to retired U.S. State Department ambassadors and diplomats by establishing a professional network for students through the non-profit organization Women of Color Advancing Peace & Security (WCAPS). Though her passion for diplomacy and international development can be traced back to her cultural background, her academic experiences traveling abroad to China, Spain, and Sweden through Spelman programming solidified her intentions to pursue a career as a United States Foreign Service Officer upon graduation.

As a legacy student, HaileSelassie was initially drawn to Spelman’s rich history and tradition. Since her arrival, she has focused on advocating for stronger communication channels between the student body, SGA, and Spelman’s senior administration to ensure that the College continues to grow as an evolving intellectual community dedicated to challenging the status quo.

As the 79th Spelman SGA president, HaileSelassie plans to serve her Spelman sisters by prioritizing tangible goals dedicated to promoting accountability, collaboration, and transparency on behalf of the student body.

Thoughts on why she chose to serve on the Spelman College Board of Trustees: I am happy to represent the interests of Spelman's student body as the incoming 79th Student Government Association President.
