Spelman College Board of Trustees: Elected in 2020City of Residence: Atlanta, Georgia

Elizabeth Gowans is a senior at Spelman pursuing a degree in history with a minor in food studies. In 2020, she was selected to serve a three-year team as the Student Trustee on the College's Board of Trustees.

A presidential scholar and an active member of the Honors Program, Gowans is also a member of the History Club, The Blue Record Podcast, the Spelman Social Justice Program, the Food Studies Scholars Program, and is a UNCF Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow.

Very passionate about Spelman and its connections -- from faculty, staff, students and alumnae, Gowans desires to use her role as Student Trustee to help Spelman succeed. She also enjoys cooking, baking, reading, watching movies, learning about historical figures and events, ancient civilizations and women leaders (namely Cleopatra and Empress Wu).

Her plans for the future include becoming a professor, historian, archivist and college president.

Why I Serve on the Spelman College Board of Trustees

I want to serve on the Board as a first step to becoming a college president so that I can help students like myself learn the value of attending HBCUs, loving their Blackness, and succeeding in whatever they do.
