The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has partnered with the Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective to host "Black American Portraits: A Symposium" on Mar. 2-3 in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, Ed.D., Academic Center Auditorium.
A key highlight of the symposium will be the opening conversation moderated by author Naima Keith and featuring artists Bisa Butler, Calida Rawls, and Amy Sherald. This conversation will take place Thursday, March 2, at 4 p.m. EST and will be available via livestream on Zoom.
This symposium debuts shortly after the exhibit was unveiled for the first time at Spelman’s Museum of Fine Art on February 8. Co-curated by Spelman’s Museum of Fine Art’s Executive Director, Liz Andrews, and Tate’s Britton Family Curator-at-Large, Christine Y. Kim (both formerly of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Black American Portraits reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects, sitters, and spaces – this time placing Black women portrait artists center stage.
