A recent
PBS News Hour segment highlighted the dramatic increase in admission applications to HBCUs, despite a nationwide decrease in college enrollment. The piece centered Spelman at the forefront of the shift, citing that the College's applicant pool nearly tripled from just over 4,000 applicants in 2014 to over 11,000 applicants in 2021.
Sophomores Sekai Parker and Cadence Patrick were featured and resolutely shared why they chose Spelman over Ivy League institutions where they also gained acceptance.
It's possible that I can be in a space that is designed specifically for me as a Black woman. But I can also feel like a sense of belonging and never have to question that," Parker shared.
