Yan Xu Gives AUC Students Project Management Career Boost

December 2021

Spelman College Offers New Course in Project Management

Project management is one of the most in-demand skills to have with 25 million project professionals needed globally by 2030, according to the Project Management Institute 2021 Talent Gap Report and 2020 Salary Survey. Recognizing project managers' high job satisfaction rate and great earning power (median salary of $116,000), Yan Xu, Ph.D., PMP, eSpelman online program director and associate professor of history, recently developed two innovative courses that will enable Atlanta University Center students to become project management rock stars in 15 days.

Yan XuDr. Xu first became involved in the high-growth field of project management because during her first year serving as the chair of the Department of History at Spelman, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the U.S., bringing challenges to educational leaders at all levels. Inspired by the college leadership and her colleagues, Dr. Xu decided to learn project management in a systematic way to become a more effective educational leader. She completed the Project Management Program with Syracuse University in July 2020 and passed the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Exam in October 2020. She is proof that life-long learning is valuable and that career pivots are necessary and invaluable.

Recent research has shown that there is a global talent shortage of project management professionals, which has imposed a considerable risk to organizations that aim to implement strategic initiatives on time and within  budget.

Large Blue Quote LeftProject management skills are the competencies a person needs to effectively lead a project from ideation to completion. These transferable skills can be applied in any field and industry.” Dr. Xu said.
